This variety reflects on lawful interception. Some VoIP networks allow for lawful interception solutions in much the same way as the traditional PSTN networks. Other networks require truly packet switched interception solutions.

Technical information

LIMA for VoIP is an interception solution that can be used to intercept voice traffic in packet switched networks.

Typical installations include a LIMA Management System and one or more LIMA Mediators. In configurations that use active interception, the LIMA MS and Mediator are directly integrated with the core network elements. The intercepted traffic can be based on RTP or SS7. In either case the LIMA Mediator is able to handle the intercepted traffic and convert it into the required handover format.
