The Enterprise Service Bus
The Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) provides fundamental services for more
complex architectures. For example, an ESB incorporates the features required
to implement a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
In general, an ESB can be thought of as a mechanism that manages access
to applications and services (especially legacy versions) to present a
single, simple, and consistent interface to end-users via web or forms
based client-side front-ends.
The Enterprise Service Bus is an architectural pattern that can be used to simplify communication between service users and service providers. To do this, the ESB provides an interface to the service users and routes it to the interface provided by a service provider. The ESB's key features are:
- Serving as an intermediate between users of services and service providers
- Standardizing communication between users and service providers
- Transforming data between users and service providers
- Orchestrating handling of user requests and distribution or services
- Monitoring user requests and reporting service usage (including check against SLA)
Typically communication using ESB between the presentation layer (front-end) and the business layer is done by means of SOAP (synchronous) or JMS queues (asynchronous). By using SOAP, SLA management becomes much easier.
In essence, ESB does for distributed heterogeneous back-end services and applications and distributed heterogeneous front-end users and information consumers what middleware is really supposed to do:
